Fraser Island, another barrier island lying 200km north of Moreton Bay on the same coastline, is the largest sand island in the world. Georgias Lower Coastal Plain, an environmental region of the Coastal Plain Province, contains some of the states most well-known geographic featuresthe coastal barrier islands and the Okefenokee Swamp. This represents an interesting departure from the traditional view of Barrier Island evolution (either regression or transgression) as a result of variations in sea level, sediment supply, and accommodation space. He proposed that sediment moving in the breaker zone through agitation by waves in longshore drift would construct spits extending from headlands parallel to the coast. The model predicts that retreat of the Virginia barrier islands will increase from its current rate of about 5 meters per year to almost 7 meters per year by 2100, a nearly 50% increase. Eventually the sandbars rise above the water as islands. Colonization by plants results in the trapping of sediment to form low dunes and the island may grow through further accretion in much the same way that coral cays develop on barrier reefs and carbonate platforms. Heavy lines outline the boundary of the Coastal Plain and separate the Great Plains from the Central Lowlands. The coastal plain is the horizontal or gently sloping strata of sediments generally representing a strip of sea bottom that emerged in recent geological time and may extend many kilometers inland. A good example is found at Miramichi Bay, New Brunswick, where Portage Island as well as Fox Island and Hay Island protect the inner bay from storms in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Several communities in New Jersey are protected today by a combination of soft and hard solutions (beach nourishment, groins, bulkheads, and dunes), and many communities employ several of these methods of protection. In addition to tide and wave actions, development of barrier islands is also affected by other processes (e.g., stochastic extreme events, sea-level change, tectonic movements, and fluvial input). Rather than forming within the past few hundred or few thousand years, it is possible that barrier islands have been in continuous existence over the entire 18,000-year rise of sea level. This results in development of herringbone sedimentary structures because of the constant differing flow of waves.
